Why is there a difference?
Optus offers 3G services using two different types of "spectrum" – 900MHz and 2100 MHz. Think of this as similar to the channels on a radio or TV. The problem with this is that some very popular Smartphone and tablet devices are not compatible with the 900MHz spectrum that Optus uses for 3G coverage outside major metropolitan areas.
This means that if you use one of these devices outside of major metropolitan areas, it will access the Optus GSM/GPRS network (where it is available) but you will only be able to access limited data speeds. So accessing the mobile internet or your email in these areas will be significantly slower than in Optus 2100MHz coverage areas. In business, this could make all the difference.
On the other hand, if you have a Smartphone or tablet device that works on the Telstra Next G™ network, you can enjoy 3G coverage in far more places.
Refer to the attached maps to compare Optus' 2100MHz 3G”on street” coverage in each state against Telstra Next G™ network handheld coverage.
Note: these maps do not represent the entire coverage of the Next G™ network. For maps representing full coverage of the Next G™ network, please click here.
